Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The Boko Haram insurgency, which has plagued northern Nigeria since 2009, has had profound effects on the educational system in many parts of Borno State, including Chibok LGA. Chibok became internationally recognized after the abduction of 276 schoolgirls by Boko Haram militants in 2014, an incident that drew global attention to the insecurity in the region. Since then, the insurgency has disrupted education by targeting schools, teachers, and students, resulting in school closures, loss of life, and displacement of families. According to Ahmed & Lawal (2023), the insurgency has led to a significant decline in the quality and accessibility of education in areas under attack, and the long-term effects are visible in the widespread displacement of students and teachers, as well as the growing number of out-of-school children. This study seeks to investigate the specific effects of Boko Haram insurgency on the education sector in Chibok, with a focus on school closures, the safety of students, and the overall decline in educational attainment in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The Boko Haram insurgency has had a devastating impact on education in Chibok LGA, as schools have been destroyed, teachers and students displaced, and educational activities severely disrupted. The region has faced not only physical destruction of educational infrastructure but also psychological trauma that has affected students and their families. Despite efforts to restore normalcy, the full extent of the insurgency’s impact on education in Chibok remains under-explored. This study seeks to examine the effects of Boko Haram on education in Chibok, with the aim of informing policies and strategies for rebuilding the educational system in conflict-affected areas.

The findings will be useful for policymakers, educational authorities, and humanitarian organizations in designing interventions to rebuild the educational system and support affected students and teachers. Furthermore, the research will highlight the need for education as a tool for peacebuilding in conflict areas.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the effects of the Boko Haram insurgency on education in Chibok LGA, Borno State. It will assess the impact on educational infrastructure, student enrollment, and the psychological effects on students and teachers.
